Binary Opposites

Binary opposites are two terms or concepts that are related but are opposite in meaning. Two theoretical opposites are defined and set off against each other.
Strauss believed that the way we understood words depends on how we understand the different of the word and its opposites, and not on the meaning themselves.

Harry Potter

An example of this is from the film Harry Potter. Harry is seen as the good guy in every movie during in the series, which is wanted from the powerful Voldemort. Voldemort plays the role of the villain in the movie who supports evil, resulting with a final goal of killing Harry Potter, the chosen one

Voldemort’s appearance is very expressive as it clearly shows the binary opposites between the two characters. His face alone is very disturbing to look it, as he rarely smiles. Therefore, lighting and makeup is a binary opposite, which is used to make a character look good or evil in the movie. For example, Voldemort does not have a nose and an unusual eye colour, generating an intimidating and mysterious look for the audience.

Additionally, another binary opposite is the use of different kind of magic. Voldemort uses dark magic for his evil outcomes. He finds a sense of joy through the use of dark magic, therefore, resulting in becoming one of the most powerful wizards ever made. However, Harry uses magic that is taught by Hogwarts, causing no harm to the people around him. He uses this magic to destroy Voldemort and his use of dark magic.

Twilight

The use of binary is much more complex in the twilight series as it is not easy to spot who is good or evil. In the series, there is a battle between werewolves and vampires, which was clear to the audience that both sides are very different. Therefore, it was the audience’s decision which team they preferred better. Both Jacob and Edward looked very different, which created a contract. Edward was seen as much paler and less confident in his body language, On the other hand, Jacob was usually topless, tanned and much confident with his body language.

Another binary opposite used in the series is the dark gloomy lighting used on the vampires against the normal lighting which is used for the non-vampires. This allows the audience to notice the difference between the two types of characters clearly.
